2021-2022 NATIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION

The Office The Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is pleased to be associated with the National Moot Court Competition for the year 2021-2022.

The National Moot Court Competition, introduced by the Turks and Caicos Islands Bar Association in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Judiciary of the Turks and Caicos Islands, is an incredible introduction for High School students (‘Mooters’) between the ages of 15 and 17 years old to the legal field through skills-based training, networking, hands-on mentorship, and invaluable work experience.

Finalists will compete, not just for trophies and prizes, but for internships at law firms and an intimate mentorship lunch with high ranked members of the Judiciary including the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The National Moot Court Competition offers a very unique opportunity for Mooters to acquire certain beneficial and lifelong learning skills including teamwork, critical thinking, and public speaking.

Mooters are presented with hypothetical situations to argue. As they do so, these debates bring out the very best as each Mooter hone skills in live rounds of quick-thinking oral advocacy under the guidance and encouragement of a Bar Council-appointed attorney-mentor.  These mentors would have also introduced the students to mooting via an instructional (and entertaining) short video tutorial, live demonstrations, and hands-on and question-and-answer sessions.

Under the guidance of Public Prosecutors Ms. Tameka Grant and Ms. Mickia Mills, the ODPP actively supported and facilitated the court shadowing aspects of the competition by mentoring students of Precious Treasures International School who successfully qualified for the second round of the completion, which took place on Saturday, April 9th at Supreme Court Room1, 1288 Leeway Highway, Providenciales.

We also applaud the Mooters for the performance at The Moot Court of Appeal. Their outstanding presentations were observed and assessed by a distinguished panel, which included Her Ladyship Mrs. Shetela Hall Green (third left to right) from the ODPP.
